Class 8M

Welcome to 8M!
Mrs Miller

Miss Harbidge
Mrs Shakespeare

In 8M homework is set each Tuesday to be handed in each Friday, and each Friday to be handed in the following Tuesday.

We have green fingers in 8M!

On Monday 23rd April 5 of us helped David and Chris from the Rotary Club to dig the beds in our allotment.

First we had to dig a trench using spades (it was hard work!) and then we had to plant the potatoes making sure there was a space between each potato. We then had to break up the big clumps of soil and rake the bed so that it was was nice and flat. David also told us that from each potato that we planted, we would get 10 more potatoes!!

It was hard work but we all had a great time including Miss Harbidge who also helped to dig and rake the soil!

Laser Quest

On Wednesday 28th March 8M went to Laser Quest in Acocks Green for their end of term reward.

We had a great time despite the vests being quite heavy. We played two games and even Mrs Miller and Miss Harbidge joined in! A great day had by all!

Look what 8M have been up to........

On Wednesday 7th March, 8M had a visit from two local police officers, Terrie and Bianca.

They spoke to us about the law and taught us that there are consequences to act action we choose. Terri talked to us about the role of the Police in society. Pupils really took part well in class discussion and in the interactive activities. They also showed us and talked us through all the different items that they have to carry on their belts which make them very heavy! They also recruited two new officers, PC Bradley Bygraves and PC Thomas Cufflin who arrested Ellie-Mai and Nuwan for their inappropriate behaviour

Coleshill church and the food bank

On Tuesday 13th February we visited Coleshill church and our local food bank as part of our Social Action project that we have been doing in PSD.

Mike and Mrs Downes showed us around the church, teaching us about the different parts the church. We also did some brass rubbings using special crayons and some of us got to have a go at bell ringing. It was very cold but we learnt lots including how they are developing the church over the next few years.

After a short drive we arrived at our local food bank where we handed over all the food that we had collected as a whole school. We learnt about what happens to the food after it has been donated and met two kind ladies that give up their own time each week to help.

A huge thank you to everyone that donated, it is much appreciated!

Mountains, mountains and more mountains!

Last half term our topic was Mountains. We have been working hard in all of our lessons to research different mountains, identify features of a mountain and create our very own diary accounts about being on the Arctic Sunrise.

We are very proud of our hard work!

Litter picking at Lanchester Park

On Thursday 1st February 8M went to Lanchester Park and met with some people from Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and some employees from AMEY to do some litter picking as part of our Social Action Project in PSD.

We all had a great time despite the cold and rain showers. We had fun finding lots of litter and learning about what happens to the litter after it has been collected. We also got the chance to ask the employees from AMEY questions about their job.

Bradgate Park

On Monday 22nd January, Year 8M went to Bradgate Park. We went to look at the landscape and also to look at how we keep warm as part of our mountains topic work. Pupils went on a walk, spotting deer on our way.  We enjoyed lunch at the café and pupils were given the opportunity to buy a hot drink if they wished. Pupils were excellently behaved throughout the day with Nuwan commenting, “the view is breathtaking.”

Making soup.

8M have been making soup as part of our DT work. We sourced recipes and estimated how much it would cost before going to Aldi and Morrisons to compare prices of the ingredients we needed to buy. We selected ingredients to make three soups: Carrot and coriander, root vegetable soup and sweet potato and butternut squash soup.

We cooked the soups and tasted each one, identifying which one we liked the best. Pupil have enjoyed learning new life skills both in the community and in the Food Technology room cooking.

Alice in Wonderland/Frankfurt Christmas Market

On Wednesday 6th December we travelled by public transport into Birmingham to watch Alice in Wonderland at the Old Rep Theatre.

After the performance we walked through the Frankfurt Christmas Markets where we saw a singing reindeer and lots of stalls selling sweets, ornaments, food etc. It was great looking at all the different market stalls and some of us bought things to eat.

We all had a great day and the show was fab!

Christmas Fair

On the 6th of December we held our annual Christmas Fair. The 'Gr8 8Makers' were like little elves busy making items such as lollipop stick trees, crackers, woollen trees, stick trees and props for our photo booth. Our project manager, Jerome did a fab job of organising us and making sure we were doing what we were supposed to be doing. We had a great time and sold lots of our items.

Forest Skills

8M have been taking part in a programme of Forest Skills sessions. Each Monday afternoon we visit Smiths Wood. We have explored the woods, looking at the different types of trees we could find, done some nature pictures and have made wooden name medallions. We have been using tools safely and showing that we can work together as a team.

Over the weeks we will be looking at how the forest has changed. Watch this space for our pictures!

National Arboretum

On Wednesday 15th November we visited The National Arboretum. We visited as part of the work we have been doing on Remembrance Day. Whilst we were there we visited the various memorial walls for different conflicts and laid a wreath from 8M by the Afghanistan memorial wall.

In class we did creative writing about war, titled, 'We Remember because.....'

In art pupils have researched and created some beautiful silhouette and sunset pictures. All pieces of work are on display in our classroom.
